TONIGHT'S FORECAST FOR AMARILLO
Friday, September 05, 2008
Tonight's forecast
Partly Cloudy with Isolated Thunderstorms
58°
If you are heading out to one of the many Friday Night High School Football games, you will definitely need to keep an eye on the sky and keep an umbrella handy just in case one or more of the isolated to widely scattered showers and t-storms Friday night moves over the stadium. A detailed Friday Night High School Football Forecast is below. Otherwise, the showers and t-storms will persist into the early morning hours on Saturday and will be capable of producing a quick .10 to .33 of an inch with isolated, heavier totals upwards of 1 inch with the stronger t-storms. Overnight low temperatures will drop to the 54-62 degree range by sunrise Saturday. Winds will switch directions from the south and southwest to the northeast at speeds averaging 15-25 mph with some gusts upwards of 35-40 mph possible all night long. *******FRIDAY NIGHT HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL FORECAST******* Simply put, get ready for at least a few showers or thunderstorms to play havoc with the high school football games Friday night. That means that some delays or cancellations could be possible as t-storms, producing frequent cloud-to-ground lightning, could occur. Some storms may also be capable of producing hail and strong winds, so keep an eye on the sky and keep the umbrella handy. Remember that lightning can, and does, strike well away from where it is raining, so if you hear thunder, it's time to get out of the stadium and head to a car. Sit there until you can't hear the thunder anymore! Kickoff temperatures will be in the 74-82 degree range and drop to the 66-75 degree range by the 4th quarter. The winds will also be switching directions during most of the games as southerly to southwesterly winds at kickoff switch around to the northeast and blow at speeds averaging 15-25 mph with some gusts upwards of 35-40 mph possible. So, not only will the weather be playing havoc with the games, the wind direction and speeds will do so as well.

EXTENDED FORECAST FOR AMARILLO
Sunday, September 07, 200859° | 84°
Winds will start to increase on Sunday as yet another "cool" front begins to head our way in response to an upper-level storm system making its way through the Plains States. Skies will be mostly sunny in the morning before becoming partly cloudy in the afternoon as high temperatures soar to the 81-89 degree range by late day. Winds will blow from the south and southwest at speeds averaging 15-25 mph in the morning with some gusts upwards of 35-40 mph to the 20-30 mph average range with some gusts as high as 40-50 mph in the afternoon!
Monday, September 08, 200855° | 77°
A "cool" front will blow through the region on Monday shifting our strong southerly to southwesterly winds around to the north and northeast at speeds averaging 20-30 mph with some gusts upwards of 40-50 mph possible. A few isolated to widely scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop along and behind the cool front with average rainfall amounts varying from .15 to .40 of an inch with isolated, heavier totals upwards of 1 inch from the stronger t-storms. High temperatures will warm to the 72-81 degree range by late day. Partly to occasionally mostly cloudy skies will prevail throughout the day on Monday. Even better rain chances are expected Monday night and early Tuesday morning as part of the upper-level storm system to our north brushes by and causes the atmosphere to "lift" and scattered showers and t-storms will result.
Tuesday, September 09, 200859° | 79°
There may be some leftover showers and t-storms Tuesday morning as the upper-level disturbance continues to move away from the area. Additional, average rainfall totals will vary from .10 to .25 of an inch with isolated, heavier totals upwards of .50 of an inch with the stronger t-storms. Skies will be mostly cloudy to cloudy Tuesday morning before becoming partly cloudy in the afternoon. High temperatures will be kept down by the cloud cover and the rain chances during the morning to the 75-84 degree range as northeasterly winds blow at speeds averaging 15-25 mph with some gusts as high as 35-40 mph possible, especially during the morning hours.
